Roger and his crew wanted to catch some sharks on saturday in honor of shark week. The action was slower than I’ve seen since the sharks showed up this summer. I’m guessing the HOT water temps sent the fish up the coast in search of cooler water. The boys stuck it out and ended up landing a nice blacknose shark. The next day the redfish bite was excellent. I was suprised they ate so well since the flood tides have allowed the fish to feed on fiddler crabs in the spartina grass at high tide. Will put a pile of redfish in the boat – we had a great time. Good work Will.
I had Hampton & Russ scheduled for a charter and was reminded that the Bobby Clarke Memorial Tournament was happening in Georgetown, SC today. We called Georgetown Landing Marina and got Hampton registered the night before the tournament. We started the day off by catching a nice blacktip shark that kept Russ & Hampton on the bow for at least 30mins. The rest of the day we picked at the redfish here and there – it was a little slower than normal due to the heat. Hampton did a great job today and got to weigh a nice 3.4 lb redfish at the tournament. He was the only kid to release his catch after the weigh-in. Great job Hampton! You da man. All fish were caught on live menhaden fished on circle hooks on the bottom. As you can imagine, most of the activity was early in the morning with the heat advisory in effect.
Had a couple of good fishing trips on saturday and sunday. Had Dan from Charlotte, NC on saturday. He caught some really nice reds and did battle with several 60-80lb spinner sharks. Its almost as fun as tarpon fishing when those spinner harks get airborne.
On sunday I was able to take my friend Oscar and his two boys. Oscar and I have worked together at the Hospital since I finished school. He leaves next week to begin a new job as CEO of a Hospital in the Appalachian mountains. Oscar has been a good mentor over the years and it was nice to return the favor by putting him and his boys on some nice redfish. Good luck in your new job Oscar. Hopefully I can get up there and fish some of your trout streams!
